EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS –
VOICE OF AUDUBON FOR FRIDAY, MAY 11 (2007)
The Prothonotary Warbler along Dykes Pasture Road in West Gloucester was
still present there at least as recently as Wednesday.
Seabirds counted on Tuesday from various east-facing beaches between
Truro and Chatham included 5 Red-throated Loons, 13 Common Loons, 2
Northern Fulmars, roughly 2400 Greater Shearwaters, 1700 Sooty
Shearwaters, 31 Manx Shearwaters, 25 Wilson's Storm-Petrels, roughly
4000 Northern Gannets, 33 American Oystercatchers, 7 Greater Yellowlegs,
4 Parasitic Jaegers, 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull, and 9 Black-legged
Kittiwakes, seen from the North Shore off Gloucester were 40 Greater
Shearwaters, 2 Sooty Shearwaters, 2 Manx Shearwaters, 25 Wilson's
Storm-Petrels, and 1 Iceland Gull, and at Andrew's Point in Rockport
there were 2 Greater Shearwaters, 1 Sooty Shearwater, 9 Manx
Shearwaters, roughly 500 Northern Gannets, and 3 Razorbills.
Reports from Plum Island this week included 2 King Rails, 8 Semipalmated
Plovers, 12 White-rumped Sandpipers, 1 Dunlin, 2 Wilson's Phalaropes, 1
Alder Flycatcher, 1 Cliff Swallow, 3 Brown Thrashers, and 12 Saltmarsh
Sharp-tailed Sparrows, nesting birds found on Snake Island in Winthrop
included 3 pairs of American Oystercatchers, 1 pair of Willets, and 5
pairs of Common Terns, and a report from the Manomet section of Plymouth
included a late Common Goldeneye, 1 Manx Shearwater, 2 Great Cormorants,
900 Northern Gannets, 1 Black-legged Kittiwake, and a Yellow-breasted
Chat.
Recent miscellaneous reports have included a Tennessee Warbler in East
Gloucester, 2 Evening Grosbeaks in Lincoln, a Yellow-throated Vireo in
Lexington, 220 pairs of nesting Common Terns in Hull, 2 Acadian
Flycatchers and 1 Hooded Warbler at Wompatuck State Park in Hingham, 14
Red Knots at Duxbury Beach, 2 Black Terns, a Least Flycatcher, and a
Hermit Thrush at Nantucket, 7 Wilson's Storm-Petrels from the ferry
crossing Nantucket Sound, and 280 Northern Gannets and an Atlantic
Puffin at Race Point in Provincetown.
