You have reached the Cape May Birding Hotline, a service of New Jersey
Audubon Society’s Cape May Bird Observatory. This week’s message was
prepared on Sunday June 10, 2007. Highlights this week include
sightings of BROWN PELICAN, SOOTY SHEARWATER, GREATER SHEARWATER,
WILSON’S STORM-PETREL, GREAT CORMORANT, WHITE-FACED IBIS, LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULL, ROSEATE TERN, SANDWICH TERN, WHITE-RUMPED
SANDPIPER, EURASIAN COLLARED DOVE, MISSISSIPPI KITE, NORTHERN PARULA
and WHITE-THROATED SPARROW.
BROWN PELICANS are being seen in Cape May this week. On 6/7 one
individual was seen on Champagne Island, while a second bird was seen
from Sunset Beach on 6/9.
Both SOOTY SHEARWATER and GREATER SHEARWATER were seen from Cape May
point in the afternoon on 6/6.
Three WILSON’S STORM-PETRELS were seen from Cape May Point on 6/7.
The imm. GREAT CORMORANT continues to be seen in the Hereford Inlet
area as of 6/9.
On 6/3 a WHITE-FACED IBIS was observed at Brigantine NWR.
Also in the Stone Harbor Point area, on 6/7, was a first summer
LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL.
A ROSEATE TERN continues to be seen in the Cape May Point are this
last week. The last report of this bird was on 6/6 from the Pearl
Ave. jetty.
An adult SANDWICH TERN made and appearance at Stone Harbor Point on 6/8.
On 6/9, four breeding WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS were observed at Stone
Harbor Point.
A possible EURASIAN COLLARED DOVE was seen flying over the Cape May
Point State Park on 6/7. Attempts to relocate the bird were
unsuccessful.
A MISSISSIPPI KITE was seen on 6/8 and 6/9 in the vicinity of the
Beanery parking lot and the intersection of Bayshore and Stimpson.
A signing NORTHERN PARULA was at the Cape May point State Park
property along Seagrove on 6/7.
Lastly, a late WHITE-THROATED SPARROW has been frequenting a feeder
on Seagrove Ave in West Cape May.
ANNOUNCEMENT:
Starting June 1, both CMBO centers (Northwood and Center for Research
and Education) will be observing new hours of operation. Both
centers will now be opening at 9:30 a.m.
On Saturday June 16, the Northwood Center will have a delayed opening
at 12:00 noon due road closures for the Cape May Point run.
CMBO Bookstore hours are as follows; Northwood Center on East Lake
Drive in Cape May Point; summer hours, Wednesday- Monday 9:30-4:30.
The Northwood Center will be closed on Tuesdays. The Center for
Research and Education on Rt. 47 in Goshen is open Tuesday- Sunday
9:30- 4:30. At least one center will be open everyday to serve our
members needs.
The New Jersey Audubon Society is offering a special springtime half-
