This is the Thursday, June 21, 2007 Missouri Rare Bird
Alert, a statewide service of the Audubon Society of
Missouri, serving the birding community of Missouri
since 1901. The bird alert is compiled from reports
submitted by ASM members and other birders throughout
the state.
** NOTE: The report includes birds that are listed as
rare, casual, or accidental on the 2003 Annotated
Checklist of Missouri Birds (with revisions in 2004
and 2005). Species that appear in ALL CAPS in the
“Species Mentioned” section are listed as “casual” or
“accidental” and thus require documentation. (Note
that some birds may be considered rare only during a
particular season or in a particular part of the
state.) The Missouri checklist can be accessed at:

KANSAS CITY AREA
On Sunday, June 17, Linda Casebolt found a large,
mostly black and white bird, swimming on Lakewood Lake
(Jackson Co.) but was uncertain as to its
identification. However, follow up trips on Monday,
June 18, and Wednesday, June 20, by Bob Fisher
confirmed the bird in question was a WESTERN GREBE, an
accidental species in Missouri during the summer. For
those interested in observing this bird feel free to
e-mail Linda Casebolt at Lincase@COMCAST.NET to make
arrangements.
WEST CENTRAL
Andy Forbes and others observed a fly-over (probable
male) ANHINGA at the Horton Bottoms Natural Area at
Four-Rivers CA (Vernon Co.) on Tuesday, June 19.
However, the area the bird was observed in is very
difficult to access, but birders in the area should be
on the lookout just in case it could be sticking
around. Additionally at Four-Rivers CA, Andy and
others observed at least (3) MISSISSIPPI KITES.
ST. LOUIS AREA
On Thursday, June 14, Jackie Chain and the Thursday
WGNSS group observed at least (5) BLACK VULTURES
soaring over Tower Stone Quarry (Ste Genevieve Co.).
James Hickner reported a single OSPREY was present in
Ellis Bay across from Teal Pond at Riverlands M.B.S
(St. Charles Co.) on Tuesday, June 19.
CENTRAL
Scott Schuette reported that as of Friday, June 15, at
least (1) male PAINTED BUNTING had returned to the
Runge Conservation Nature Center in Jefferson City
(Cole Co.). The bird has been being seen near the
first bench along the Raccoon Trail and was last
reported present on Tuesday, June 19.
Mike Doyen reported a SORA was observed by himself and
Jerry Decker in the shallows along Little Piney Creek
on Saturday, June 16.
SOUTH
Dean Rising reported a singing CERULEAN WARBLER at
Busiek State Forest on Friday, June 15.
Phil Wire reported on Thursday, June 21, that Andy
Forbes, Scott Schuette and he have had some great luck
with GREATER ROADRUNNERS over the last couple of
weeks. Today, June 21, they observed two GREATER
ROADRUNNERS along the Glade Top Trail (Douglas Co.).
They observed another GREATER ROADRUNNER outside of
Gainesville (Ozark Co.) on June 6 and yet another was
observed by them on June 7 near Hartville (Wright
Co.).
