A SANDWICH TERN was seen today at Nantucket, and other recent reports
from the island have included 29 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 1 ARCTIC
TERN, 9 BLACK TERNS, and 1 YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER.
Reports from the Newburyport/Plum Island area this week have included
an
out-of-season BRANT, 31 GADWALL, 4 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 6
WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS, 4 LEAST BITTERNS, 12 GREAT EGRETS,
60 SNOWY EGRETS, 1 TRICOLORED HERON, 54 SEMIPALMATED
PLOVERS, 54 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 865 LESSER YELLOWLEGS,
217 WILLETS, 3 WHIMBREL, 720 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 180
LEAST SANDPIPERS, 2 STILT SANDPIPERS, roughly 1000 SHORT-
BILLED DOWITCHERS, 4 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 4 LAUGHING
GULLS, 1 LITTLE GULL, 1 BLACK-HEADED GULL, 350 BONAPARTE'S
GULLS, 6 ROSEATE TERNS, 140 COMMON TERNS, 1 FORSTER'S
TERN, 10 WILLOW FLYCATCHERS, 33 PURPLE MARTINS, 1500 TREE
SWALLOWS, 15 MARSH WRENS, 5 BROWN THRASHERS, 3 BLACK-
AND-WHITE WARBLERS, 15 SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED
SPARROWS, 2 ORCHARD ORIOLES, 32 BALTIMORE ORIOLES,
and 4 PURPLE FINCHES.
Seen at the Great Meadows Refuge in Concord were 22 GREAT BLUE
HERONS, 2 GREAT EGRETS, 4 SNOWY EGRETS, 2 GREEN HERONS,
roughly 100 WOOD DUCKS, 3 HOODED MERGANSERS, 1 SORA, 1
SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, 45 KILLDEER, 2 GREATER YELLOWLEGS,
4 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 2 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS, 65 LEAST
SANDPIPERS, 3 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, and 1 SHORT-BILLED
DOWITCHER (belonging to the Midwestern "hendersoni" race).
Miscellaneous reports this week have included a YELLOW-CROWNED
NIGHT-HERON at the Ipswich River Sanctuary in Topsfield, 8 BLACK
SCOTERS in Gloucester Harbor, an out-of-season RUDDY DUCK at Horn
Pond in Woburn, and 14 WHIMBREL at the Wellfleet Bay sanctuary in
South Wellfleet.
