Shorebirds from the north have been moving through the Calgary area in good numbers.
On July 15, Terry Korolyk estimated 500 LESSER YELLOWLEGS and 60-70 GREATER YELLOWLEGS at the south end of Weed Lake along Hwy 560 just east of Langdon as well as 200 LESSER and 30 GREATER YELLOWLEGS east of Irricana at ponds on Twp Rd 264 1 km east of Rge Rd 261. Also seen there were 100 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 22 STILT SANDPIPERS, and 10 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS.
Terry Korolyk and Richard Clarke both reported good numbers of SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS at Weed Lake. Richard Clarke also saw 60-70 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES at the south end of Weed Lake on July 15.
On July 14 at Clear Lake, east of Stavely, T. Korolyk reported 500-600 WILSON'S PHALAROPES as well as many SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS AND 2 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES and Ken Havard reported 2 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS.
TENNESSEE WARBLERS have been banded at IBS on July 7 (2) and July 17 (1).
The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is on Monday, July 23.

BIRD STUDY GROUP - Meets the 1st Wednesday of the month, September - May at 7:30 pm, Room 211, BioSciences Bldg, University of Calgary. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, September 5, with Ted Hindmarch presenting "Birding in the Cold Lake Region." Doors open at 7:00 PM.
