SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY
A BELTED KINGFISHER was reported at the east end of Lake Gregory in the
San Bernardino Mountains on September 23. It has also been heard on the
south shore of the lake. Take the Lake Gregory turnoff from Highway 18
past Crestline. Steve Myers reported three LEWIS’S WOODPECKERS AT
Horsethief Springs. There also was a TOWNSEND’S SOLITAIRE, PINE SISKEN
and RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER from the same area. Horsethief Springs is the
northeast section of San Bernardino County in the Kingston Mountains. Take
the Cima Road exit from I-15 and travel about 30 miles until you reach the
springs. At the Desert Studies Center at Zzyzx the ripe fan palm fruit was

WARBLERS. RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS were common. GAMBLE’S QUAIL and CHUKARS
were abundant in several places. Sandy Koonce reported a VIRGINIA’S
WARBLER at Ford Park in Redlands on Sunday, September 25 in a mixed flock
of YELLOW, ORANGE-CROWNED, WILSON’S and BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLERS. The
flock was on the northeast side of the park about 50 – 100 years northwest
of the playground. He also reported his first RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET and
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER of the fall for Redlands. Take I -10 to Ford

western end. Sandy Remley reported a BELTED KINGFISHER at Erwin Lake in
the San Bernardino Mountains. Take Highway 38 from Redlands, drive over
Onyx Summit and just past Lake Williams (about 3 miles) turn right on
State Lane, drive to the end, turn right, at the next street turn left and
drive under a Ponderosa archway. In about 2/10 mile look for the blue
ribbon on the barbed wire on the north side of the road. The bird was
feeding on timber pilings in the middle of the lake. A scope is helpful
to get a good view. Herman Vanoosten reported male WILLIAMSON’S SAPSUCKER
