This is Pinyon Jay with the New Mexico Bird Report for August 2, 2005,
sponsored by the New Mexico Ornithological Society. When phone numbers are given

Spoonbill, Three-toed Woodpeckers, Kiskadee, White Ibis, Ruby-throated Hummingbird.

In Rio Arriba County:
JO saw three VEERYS near the Elkhorn Lodge in Chama on July 17, when two
flew across the rio.

In Sandoval County:
TB on July 28 had an escaped BOBWHITE in Corrales on Loma Larga between
Angel Road and Villa de Paz.

In Taos County:
EW had an INDIGO BUNTING at her home in Talpa south of Taos on July 29
and August 2. She had a BLUE GROUSE with two young in Santa Barbara Canyon near
Peņasco on July 31 and reports that ST had a COLLARED DOVE in Arroyo Hondo on
July 31.
BW 11 miles in on Forest Road 76 off of NM 518 into Duran Canyon between
Tres Ritos and the Sipapu Ski area discovered 15 PINE GROSBEAKS, two BLUE
GROUSE, and a SAW-WHET OWL at dusk.
A team went up to the Santa Barbara Ridge and found two WHITE-TAILED
PTARMIGANS. It is less of a hike to Jicarita Peak from the east (four miles);
but still a rigorous climb from 10,200 to 12,400 feet. Take NM 518 to Angostura
and then Forest Road 161 west to the trailhead parking lot. JP, JO, and
others made the climb on July 16 and found two more ptarmigans.

In San Miguel County;
JA on July 28 had a GREAT EGRET at McAllister Lake near the Las Vegas
Refuge. It then moved to Browns Marsh on the Refuge through August 3.

In Colfax County:
DC on Stubblefield Lake saw EARED, WESTERN and CLARK'S GREBES with young.
On July 26 there was also the COMMON LOON, five WHITE PELICANS, single GREAT
and CATTLE EGRETS, and several BLACK TERNS.
He found on July 23 a DIPPER in the Tolby Campground east of Eagle Nest.

In Cibola County:
JT found several phases of RED CROSSBILLS in the Zuni Mountains. A
THREE-TOED WOODPECKER was in the burn area on June 28 along Forest Road 425 between
roads 180 and 480.

In Bernalillo County:
MC on August 1 saw about ten TURKEYS on the Ellis Trail near the junction
with the Osha Loop Trail in the Sandia Mountains.
CR on Sandia Crest on the trail to the Kiwanis Meadows from the lower
parking lot found two THREE-TOED WOODPECKERS. On July 22 PK found 'several'
below the Kiwanis Cabin and TG found two on the upper trail.

In Socorro County:
On Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio CB on July 22 saw an adult
WHITE IBIS from NM 1 near the railroad bridge. It moved to the Marsh Loop and
was seen by JB in the Marsh Deck area on July 28, by WW at the south end of
the loop on July 28, and by JP on the east side of the loop after it turns north
on July 29. JL found it between Audio Stops 6 and 7 on August 1.
CR, RB, and RV had a LEAST BITTERN on July 17 at the boardwalk. JO had a
MOORHEN near the Marsh Deck on July 19. On August 1 CL saw a LONG-BILLED CURLEW
near Audio Stop 6, three SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS near the Marsh Deck, a male
VERMILION FLYCATCHER near Audio Stop 7, and two SNOW GEESE still present.
On NM 60 west of Socorro at mile post 131.5 is a dirt road goes south
(left) into The Box cliffs. It then continues past the restroom and up into the
pinyons. CR, RB, and RV saw a GRAY VIREO July 17. JJ saw it there on July
31.

In Chaves County:
WW on July 20 had a ROSEATE SPOONBILL at Bitter Lake Refuge. WW and GW
saw it later on Unit 15. GW on July 16 had two MOORHENS and on July 13 a LEAST
BITTERN on the south half of Unit 15. JL saw it July 26, and RC on July 28.
JO on August 1 did not report the spoonbill, but saw the Moorhen and two
MARBLED GODWITS.

In Catron County:
DB on July 29 had a WHITE-FACED IBIS at the Glenwood Fish Hatchery and an
INDIGO BUNTING on the road into Glenwood. He did not see DIPPERS in
Whitewater Canyon.
JO had a female MAGNIFICENT HUMMINGBIRD and up to three males at Mogollon
on July 9. JP saw a male at the antique shop feeder there on July 24.

In Grant County:
At the Grey Feathers Lodge near Lake Roberts on July 31 LG reported a
PAINTED BUNTING.
JP on July 24 saw a female BLUE-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD and several
MAGNIFICENT HUMMINGBIRDS at the home of JDM near Lake Roberts. JO was unable to see
the Blue-throat on July 25-26. PT reported a COSTA'S HUMMINGBIRD present.
For the last week in July DMZ have had a ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD at their
Silver City feeder. MZ heard a LONG-EARED OWL near their home on July 8.
On July 17 RE saw an OLIVE WARBLER at the Cherry Creek Campground north
of Pinos Altos.
JP, BP, WW, and JO had two adult and three juvenile YELLOW-EYED JUNCOS on
the top of Burro Peak south of Silver City.

In Hidalgo County:
On the Gray Ranch a quarter mile south of the intersection of the road to
Clanton Canyon and County 1 DK and JR saw two WHITE-TAILED KITES. STAY ON THE
ROAD ON THE RANCH. WW saw one kite on July 22 perched in a line of trees on the
west side of 1 about 150 yards from the road. CL sighted two on July 30.
In Clanton Canyon DK and JR had on July 17 MONTEZUMA QUAIL. Two COMMON
GROUND-DOVES were on the road into the canyon a quarter mile west of Hwy. 1. CL
had it calling there near the creek bed on July 30. At the campground he had an
ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD immature male and two WHISKERED SCREECH-OWLS. While
hiking the canyon trail just east of the Turkey Seep and a half mile north to
Wittmore Canyon he found a RED-FACED WARBLER.
On July 31 in the New Mexico part of Guadalupe Canyon CL had the GRAY
HAWK near the ranch and several COMMON GROUND-DOVES.
RS had a BLACK-TAILED GNATCATCHER in Steeple Rock Canyon a quarter mile
above the crossing of NM 92 north of Virden July 31.

In Luna County:
LM on July 17 had his first CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD at his Deming home. At
the Deming sewage plant on July 23 he saw two BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS, ten WESTERN
SANDPIPERS, 26 WILSON'S PHALAROPES, and a LESSER YELLOWLEGS. On July 28 there
were seven AVOCETS. He had a GREEN HERON on July 28 at the Pecan Park pond,
while the PINE SISKIN was still present at the Mountain View Cemetery.

In Otero County:
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo CL reported on July 20 ten BAIRD'S
SANDPIPERS; reporting that the 'no access' signs are for hunters only-the
entire shore is open to birding.

In Eddy County:
JO on August 2 had a SANDERLING on Chesapeake Point of Brantley Lake near
Carlsbad and six UPLAND SANDPIPERS in mowed hayfields north of Loving. The
lake has good shorebird habitat.
SW has found CAVE SWALLOWS under four culverts south of Whites City and
one on the south edge of Carlsbad.
SW reports there are ELF OWLS in the Guadalupe Mts. at Dark Canyon, Rocky
Arroyo, and Last Chance Canyon.

In Lea County:
A report came from PM that on July 1 there was a KISKADEE in his yard in
Eunice. Call him at 394-2600. JO had it on August 1 with an immature eastern
type BRONZED COWBIRD.
In Jal on August 1 JO had another immature eastern BRONZED COWBIRD in the
eastern sector and an immature male RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD at feeders at
1012 Oak Street.

Central Audubon in Albuquerque has Thursday field trips. For details call
Margaret Wallen at 341-0928. Check as there may be a last minute change in
plans. On August 4 the trip is to Bosque del Apache Refuge led by Rebecca Gracey.
The August 11 trip is to Ponderosa near Jemez Pueblo led by Rebecca, August
18 they bird Embudo Canyon in the Sandias with Mary Lou Arthur, and on August
25 Sulphur and La Cienega Canyons in the Sandias with Sally Burke.

On Sunday, August 7 Sangre de Cristo Audubon will bird western Santa Fe with
the soccer fields and pond. Contact Tom Taylor at 983-8260.

On Sunday, August 7 Central will explore the Jemez Mountains at Ponderosa,
Jemez Falls, and the burn areas for three-toes. Leader is Rebecca Gracey at
262-3821.

On Saturday, August 20 Southwestern Audubon birds for high country birds and
wildflowers near Silver City led by Dale and Marian Zimmerman. Call Marian at
538-3398.

On Saturday, August 27 Sangre de Cristo gpres tp the Elk Mountain region
north of Las Vegas for fall migrants and highlands residents led by Gary and Karen
Schiltz at 757-2212.
