This is a daily summary of reports from the Arcata Bird Box
BirdBox, sponsored by the City of Arcata and Redwood Region
Audubon Society, compiled 3 October 2005 at 9:00 p.m. Most
birds reported are in Humboldt County unless otherwise noted.
Birds in caps under the “highlights” section have about 50 (plus
or minus 5) records of occurrence in Northwestern California as
defined in Stan Harris’s “Northwestern California Birds” (3rd

26 Sept.

At the Orick Dump were a CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER and a possible BLACKPOLL
WARBLER. There was a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW ½ mile east from the Redwood Creek
Oxbow (Ken Irwin).

A pelagic trip went out of Fort Bragg, MENDOCINO COUNTY; birds seen
included: 8 Northern Fulmars, 5 Pink-footed Shearwaters, 25 Sooty
Shearwaters, 3 SHORT-TAILED SHEARWATERS, 1 Black-footed Albatross , 2
Pomarine Jaegers, 1 Parasitic Jaeger, 15 Common Murres, 5 Cassin’s Auklets,
and 300 Rhinoceros Auklets (Elias Elias).

27 Sept.

A NASHVILLE WARBLER was located in a backyard on Union Street between 7th
and 11th street in Arcata (Jheremie Kellerman).

A BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER was located at the Arcata Marsh. The bird was last
seen 100 feet north east of the visitor center on the edge of the Log-Pond
(Elias Elias, David Fix).


28 Sept.

One RED KNOT was reported from the middle island at Klopp Lake in Arcata (Elias
Elias).

A BAY-BREASTED WARBLER was reported associating with a large flock of
Chickadees and Yellow-rumped Warblers. The Bay-breasted Warbler was located
in the willow patch bordered by Samoa Road and 7th Street, behind the houses
and the
park. The bird was last seen in the willow directly across from the second
blue house (Jared Wolfe).

Five BLUE-WINGED TEAL and a EURASIAN WIGEON were reported associating
with a large flock of American Widgeon and Gadwall in Gearheart Marsh at the
Arcata Marsh (Stan Harris).

29 Sept.

One BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER and 2 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS were reported from Mad
River County Park (Kerry Ross).

Two EURASIAN WIGEON (both female) were reported from Gearheart Marsh at the
Arcata Marsh project (Elias Elias).

One CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER with considerable chestnut-coloration on the
sides was
reported from the cypress grove at the end of the North Spit (David Fix).

One ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was reported from Bear River Ridge as well as
1Green-winged Teal (Sean McAllister). The Green-winged Teal was originally
considered a good candidate for a Garganey but more thorough looks proved

otherwise.

Three BLUE-WINGED TEAL and 2 Wood Ducks were reported from the Ferndale
Sewage Treatment Ponds (Sean McAllister).

A Steller’s Jay was reported from the Humboldt Bay Bird Observatory, a third
Lanphere Dunes record (Jared Wolfe).

30 Sept.

At least 5 EVENING GROSBEAKS and a single Eared Grebe were reported from
Hiller Park in Mckinleyville (Kerry Ross).

1 Oct.

A bright SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPER was found in the 1st pond on the south side
of the road going out to King Salmon from the Highway 101 exit (Sean
McAllister).

In a plowed field, west of Highway 101, in between the Elk River and
Humboldt Hill Road exits, were 1 PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER and many LAPLAND
LONGSPURS. At the Hookton Slough area of Humboldt Bay NWR there were a male
EURASIAN WIDGEON and 1 RED KNOT. One-quarter mile south of the bridge, along
the road at Cock Robin Island, was a BLACKPOLL WARBLER in the willows (Sean
McAllister).

A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was seen in a backyard off of Heather Lane in
Arcata (Rob Fowler).

2 Oct.
--------

A BLACKPOLL WARBLER was seen in a backyard in Eureka was seen (Louise
Bacon-Ogden).

At the Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center a ROCK WREN jumped up on the railing
and was seen by the observer during a meeting (Tom Leskiw)!

A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was seen on Fulmor Road in the Ferndale Bottoms. The
bird was about 100 yards downstream from the 90-degree turn, which then
parallels the river (Sean McAllister).

At Big Lagoon there were 75 late VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOWS with some VAUX’S
SWIFTS and 2 Long-billed Dowitchers. At the Orick Dump there was a late
female HERMIT WARBLER and 2 lingering YELLOW WARBLERS. At Gearheart Marsh,
at the Arcata Marsh Project, there were 2 EURASIAN WIDGEON and 2 Ring-necked
Duck (Scott Carey).

Two LAPLAND LONGSPURS and a VESPER SPARROW were seen along the Freshwater
Lagoon spit while walking from the parking lot (on the north side?) to go
check out the beached whale present there (Gary Bloomfield).

On an HSU pelagic trip above the coral sea the following species were
reported: 10 Black-footed Albatross, 15-20 Pink-footed Shearwaters, 60
Buller’s Shearwater, 20-30 Sooty Shearwaters, 50-60 Brandt’s Cormorants all
the way out to 11 miles offshore, 2 Horned Grebes in the bay, 1 RED-NECKED
GREBE, 2 Whimbrel on Woodley Island, 10-15 Red-necked Phalaropes offshore, 3
Pomarine Jaegers, 1 Parasitic Jaeger, 250-300 Common Murres, 20-30 Cassin’s
Auklets, 20 Rhinoceros Auklets, 1 TUFTED PUFFIN. Mammals included 1 BLUE
WHALE and 8 Humpbacks (Stan Harris).

A BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER was seen at Williams Grove on the Eel River,
by Myer’s Flat (Tom Leskiw).
