SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY
Thomas Benson reported a continued sighting of a PAINTED REDSTART in the
pine trees less than 100 ft. upstream from the green tank. Further up the
slope, past the fallen-trunk tree to the right was a PLUMBEOUS VIREO
calling/singing. Follow the steep paved road (Pine Kone Ln) across the
highway from the Duane Boyer Public Launch area just west of Fawnskin. As
always, care should be taken not to disturb these birds. Directions: Park
in the Duane Boyer Public Launch area just west of Fawnskin and walk up
the paved road (Pine Kone Ln.) across the highway.
Stephen Myers reported a pair of VERMILLION FLYCATCHERS with at least
three young at Mojave Narrows Regional Park in the “memorial tree grove”
near the two silos. He also reports that vermillion flycatchers have been
reported in the park for many years, but he believes this is the first
confirmed breeding in the park area. Another pair of vermilions was just
west of the park on private property. 52 WHITE-FACED IBIS were in a cow
pasture/ marsh about 200 yards north of Horseshoe Lake. A BROWN CRESTED
FLYCATCHER was calling from the forest north of Pelican Lake. Directions:
From I 15 in Victorville, exit at Bear Valley east to Ridge Crest and turn
north to the park.
Howard King reported from Bluff Lake. He saw two RED CROSSBILLS at the
Champion Lodgepole Pine. Other birds singing included NASHVILLE, WILSON’S,
and ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS, GOLDEN CROWNED KINGLETS, DUSKY FLYCATCHER and
LAWRENCE’S GOLDFINCH. At Baldwin Lake he reported a BLACK TERN and 50+
WHITE-FACED IBIS. Directions to Bluff Lake: Take Tulip Lane, about 3 mi
east of the Big Bear dam from Hwy 18. Turn right on Tulip Lane for .5 mile
to Mill Creek Rd. (Route 2N10) and turn right. Follow 2N10 through a
series of turns staying on 2N10 until reaching 2N11. Turn right and
proceed 1 mile to the parking area
Cathy McFadden reported a family of three NORTHERN PYGMY OWLS in the
eastern San Gabriels above Baldy Village. She also had what seemed like an
early HERMIT WARBLER at Icehouse Saddle.
From the Big Bear area, Howard King, led by Sandy Remley, reported killer
looks at many LAWRENCE’S GOLDFINCH.
RIVERSIDE COUNTY
From the north access to Hidden Valley there was a report of two juvenile
BLACK HEADED GROSBEAKS, and one female juvenile BLUE GROSBEAK. Access is
on the north side of the river where Etiwanda dead ends in 66th street.
Access Etiwanda south by taking the Limonite exit from I-15, north from
Norco, or south from the 60. There is no parking on the south side of
66th, and no parking on either side of Etiwanda and 66th at the corner.
IMPERIAL COUNTY
Guy McCaskie reports an adult GLOSSY IBIS with WHITE FACED IBIS,
WHIMBRELS, and other water birds in an irrigated field on the south side
of Hwy 86 about 1 mile west of Westmoreland. Other birds of interest
included a calling BLACK RAIL at the west end of Pound Rd., one SOLITARY
SANDPIPER at Fig Lagoon, a RUDDY TURNSTONE at Obsidian Butte, and immature
FRANKLIN’S GULL at Red Hill, and 5 LARGE-BILLED SAVANNAH SPARROWS at the
west end of Young Rd.
Robert Doster, a birder from out of state, reported seeing a Ruff on the
eastern edge of the Salton Sea. It was seen at the end of Garst Rd, east
of Red Hill Marina, near the large mudslide area. It was an adult male
with late summer plumage, molted head and neck, but definitely orange
legs. It flew towards the NWR.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
In general, birds that are on this weekly summary are those that are
classified as at least rare in “Birds of Southern California” by Garrett
and Dunn, “Birds of the Salton Sea” by Patten, McCaskie, and Unitt, or
in “Birds of the Lower Colorado River Valley” by Rosenberg, Ohmart,
Hunter, and Anderson. Rarity can be regional or seasonal. For example, a
nuthatch reported at the Salton Sea, where it is rare, may be on the
summary. That same bird reported from the San Bernardino Mountains, where
it is common, would not be. A sparrow reported as a rarity in Riverside
in July, may be common there in December.
