A VIRGINIA RAIL was reported in the Springbank area west of Calgary. Ted
Bodnar listened to the bird calling on Sunday July 31 but did not see it.
The bird was in a grassy depression on Range Road 32 approximately a half km
(quarter mile) south of Twp Road 251. The depression was on the east side of
the road. A large Remax Realty sign was on the west side.
PURPLE MARTINS can be seen at Chestermere Lake east of Calgary. Terry
Korolyk reported that a pair of adults was fledging at least four young at
an acreage in the northwest corner at the first intersection south of the
dam on Saturday July 30. Also present was a SAY'S PHOEBE. Terry observed
another two adult martins flying along the east side of the lake just north
of Camp Chestermere.
Terry also reported unusually large numbers of BONAPARTE'S GULLS and HOODED
MERGANSERS in the Irricana sloughs on Saturday July 30. On a slough on the
east side of Range Road 261 just south of Twp Road 270 he observed 116
Bonaparte's Gulls and four Hooded Mergs. Then at a slough on the north side
of Twp Road 270 just east of Range Road 261 he saw two Bonies and 16 mergs.
The Bonies included eight juveniles while the mergs were mixed immatures and
adult females.
