A NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL was seen being mobbed by Black-capped Chickadees in
South Glenmore Park in Calgary on Monday August 1. The bird was seen by Jim
Davis at 6pm approximately 200 metres west of the first stormwater outfall
west of the yacht club. The bird was in shrubbery about eight feet up,
approxmately 20 feet off the path. The stormwater outfall is marked G21.
There have been no further reports of the VIRGINIA RAIL reported in the
Springbank area on Sunday July 31. Ted Bodnar listened to the bird calling
from a grassy depression approximately a half km south of Twp Road 251A on
the east side of Range Road 32 (north of Hwy 1). Several birders visited the
site early Monday August 1 but were unsuccessful in refinding the bird. For
more information on this report call Ted Bodnar at 247-9696.
PEREGRINE FALCONS may be nesting in the Raven Rocks area of west Fish Creek
PP. Al MacKeigan observed two Peregrines, one of which was in a dispute with
a Red-Tail Hawk, in an area of steep cliffs along the creek part of Bebo
Grove on Monday August 1. Raven Rocks is just south of the Woodbine area of
Calgary and is between Bebo Grove and Votier's Flats. Bebo Grove can be
accessed off 24 Street SW and Votier's Flats are at the southern terminus of
Elbow Drive.
