Alabama Rare Bird Report – Sunday, October 16, 2005.

The Hummer/Bird Study Group has been banding at Ft. Morgan since 10/8 and
plans to continue through 10/22. Visitors are welcome! Frontal passage early in
session resulted in many captures including a MOURNING WARBLER. A WESTERN
KINGBIRD and three WHITE-WINGED DOVES were in the area and around the fort. On
10/13 a bird described as a CORDILLERAN (“WESTERN”) FLYCATCHER was caught and
studied. Through that date over 950 birds had been banded. [DeAL
64-B4][BGtA p. 23]

A visit to Powder Magazine Park in Montgomery 10/8 produced several warblers,
WARBLING VIREO, and ALDER FLYCATCHER. The park may be reached from exit 172
on I-65. From the exit follow AL 108 west for around 0.5 mile and turn right
towards the river to reach the park. [DeAL 45-D7]

An immature PARASITIC/LONG-TAILED JAEGER caused quite a bit of excitement
late last month at Wheeler Dam. As far as I know it was a one-day-wonder and no
more observations have been made since 9/26. Also present at the dam that day
was an unusually early adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL and over 100 Laughing
Gulls! [DeAL 17-C10][BGtA p. 207]

A probable adult GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL was noted late last month on Pelican
Island located just south of Dauphin Island. The best location to view
Pelican USED to be from the area of the fishing pier, however, I have no recent
information if this spot is currently accessible. Use caution and above all
consideration when birding on the island right now. [DeAL 64-B3][BGtA p. 10]
