Welcome to Pennsylvania Audubon's and the Patriot-News' Birdline. This
Birdline covers sightings made primarily during the week prior to Thursday,
August 4, 2005.
CENTRE COUNTY:
There were 6 GREAT BLUE HERONS, 3 GREEN HERONS, 1 OSPREY, 1 BALD EAGLE, 2
adult and 3 juvenile COOPER'S HAWKS, 2 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 4 RED-TAILED
HAWKS, 1 AMERICAN KESTREL, 3 BELTED KINGFISHERS and 1 FISH CROW at Benner
Spring Fish Hatchery on July 28 August 1 and 3 (JM).
There were 1 GREAT BLUE HERON and 2 COMMON RAVENS flying over Tussey
Mountain on July 29 (BS).
A HAIRY WOODPECKER and 1 BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER were seen in a State
College yard on July 29 (CA).
Birds seen at Millbrook Marsh on July 29, August 1 and 2 included up to 14
MALLARDS, 1 GREEN HERON, 1 TURKEY VULTURE, 1 unidentified accipiter, 12 ROCK
PIGEONS, 3 MOURNING DOVES, 10 CHIMNEY SWIFT, 1 RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD, 1
possible BELTED KINGFISHER, 1 DOWNY WOODPECKER, 1 HAIRY WOODPECKER, 2
NORTHERN FLICKERS, 4 WILLOW FLYCATCHERS, 1 EASTERN PHOEBE, 3 EASTERN
KINGBIRDS, 1 BLUE JAY, 4 AMERICAN CROWS, 2 BARN SWALLOWS, 2 BLACK-CAPPED
CHICKADEES, 2 TUFTED TITMICE, 1 WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH, 2 CAROLINA WRENS, 1
HOUSE WREN, 11 AMERICAN ROBINS, 14 GRAY CATBIRDS, 30 EUROPEAN STARLINGS, 8
CEDAR WAXWINGS, 3 YELLOW WARBLERS, 1 BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, 3 AMERICAN
REDSTARTS, 2 COMMON YELLOWTHROATS, 9 SONG SPARROWS, 2 SWAMP SPARROWS, 8
NORTHERN CARDINALS, 15 RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS, 1 COMMON GRACKLE, 17 AMERICAN
GOLDFINCHES and 6 HOUSE SPARROWS (NB).
A light RED-TAILED HAWK was seen flying over State College on August 2 and
CLIFF SWALLOWS were observed at nests on the under side of the first bridge
at the eastern exit of the Penn Stater [the bypass?] (JM).
A visit to Thompson's Woods on August 3 found 8 CANADA GEESE, 1 RED-BELLIED
WOODPECKER, 1 DOWNY WOODPECKER, 1 BLUE JAY, 3 AMERICAN CROWS, 4 BARN
SWALLOWS, 3 BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES, 3 AMERICAN ROBINS, 9 GRAY CATBIRDS, 1
COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, 3 EASTERN TOWHEES, 3 NORTHERN CARDINALS, 1
ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK and 3 AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES (NB).
Walnut Springs Park yielded 1 MOURNING DOVE, 1 RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD, 2
DOWNY WOODPECKERS, 2 GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHERS, 3 BLUE JAYS, 3 BLACK-CAPPED
CHICKADEES, 2 TUFTED TITMICE, 2 WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, 2 CAROLINA WRENS,
11 AMERICAN ROBINS, 7 GRAY CATBIRDS, 1 BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLERS, 1
EASTERN TOWHEE, 2 SONG SPARROWS, 2 NORTHERN CARDINALS and 2 COMMON GRACKLES
on August 3 (NB).
A check of Lederer Park on August 3 found 1 CHIMNEY SWIFT, 1 EASTERN PHOEBE,
1 GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER, 1 RED-EYED VIREO, 2 AMERICAN CROWS, 5
BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES, 5 TUFTED TITMICE, 1 WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH, 1
CAROLINA WREN, 9 AMERICAN ROBINS, 5 GRAY CATBIRDS, 1 BROWN THRASHER, 4
NORTHERN CARDINALS, 2 ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK and 3 COMMON GRACKLES (NB).
ELK COUNTY:
SEDGE WRENS were found on July 30 and seen again on July 31 (JF, DG, GG).
Directions: Take Route 219 to Wilcox, head east on SR 1006, then left onto
SR 1001. Go to Rasselas, just past a nice marshy area (with American
Bittern), pass T372 on your left, cross railroad tracks and it is the first
fenced wet field on the right. It is private property, do not leave the
road. The birds were audible and visible from the roadside. There are
breeding yellow-rumped warbler and white-throated sparrows about 3/4 miles
to the east at a hemlock swamp on each side of the road (JF).
FRANKLIN COUNTY:
A wet area along Pine Stump Road just east of Route 11 produced 1
SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, 5 KILLDEER, 2 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 5 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS,
1 SPOTTED SANDPIPER, 2 LEAST SANDPIPERS, 3 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS and 1
GRASSHOPPER SPARROW on July 29, 30 and August 2 (BK).
There were up to 10 RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS visiting feeders along Heisey
Road on July 30 (BK).
HUNTINGDON COUNTY:
A trip to Stone Valley on July 29 found 7 RUFFED GROUSE and 2 COOPER'S HAWKS
(JL).
LANCASTER COUNTY:
Birds (highest single day count listed) seen at Conejohela Flats on July 28,
30 and August 3 included 39 GREAT EGRETS, 1 CATTLE EGRET, 3 OSPREY, 2 adult
and 5 immature BALD EAGLES, 4 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 105 KILLDEER, 2 GREATER
YELLOWLEGS, 5 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 1 WILLET, 14 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, 52
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 4 WESTERN SANDPIPERS, 150 LEAST SANDPIPERS, 1 BAIRD'S
SANDPIPER, 6 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 2 STILT SANDPIPERS, 1 FORSTER'S TERN, 3
CASPIAN TERNS, 2 YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOOS and 1000 BANK SWALLOWS (DH, CB, BP,
DW, BSc, LE).
MCKEAN COUNTY:
Birds seen around Bradford on July 28 included RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, 1 BARRED
OWL, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS and YELLOW-RUMPED
WARBLERS (JF). A partial albino MOURNING DOVE was seen in Bradford on August
1 (JF).
There were 3 KILLDEER and 1 PECTORAL SANDPIPER at the Bradford Sewage Ponds
on August 3 (JF).
