Imperial Counties.

SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY

Sandy Remley reported an abundance of LAWRENCE’S GOLDFINCH. The best
location is an easy drive up Hwy. 38 from Redlands. They are under the
bridge located at South Fork Campground in the Barton Flats area. Fire
Road 1N04 (Frontline Rd. at this location) will give you additional
sightings, as well as looks at MOUNTAIN QUAIL, spotted LAZULI BUNTING, and
RED BREASTED SAPSUCKER. Also look for AMERICAN DIPPER along the Santa Ana
River in the area of South Fork campground. It has been reported by a
local fisherman.

RIVERSIDE COUNTY

Jennifer and Michelle Tobin reported a SOLITARY SANDPIPER at the San
Jacinto Wildlife Area. It was near the first Cowbird trap across from the
headquarters.

Madeline reported BELL’S VIREO and BLUE GROSBEAK at the 66th st. entrance
to the north side of Hidden Valley Wildlife Area. Also seen were two LONG
BILLED CURLEWS and then WHITE FACED IBIS flying west over the Santa Ana
River. Access Etiwanda south by taking the Limonite exit from I-15, north
from Norco, or south from the 60. There is no parking on the south side of
66th, and no parking on either side of Etiwanda and 66th at the corner.

IMPERIAL COUNTY

John Green birded the Salton Sea from Noffisinger south to Lack and
Lindsay. He found lots of WILSON’S and RED NECKED PHALAROPES, BLACK
SKIMMERS, YELLOW-FOOTED GULLS, a few LAUGHING GULLS and a few GULL-BILLED
TERNS. He found at least four RUDDY TURNSTONES on the west side of
Obsidian Butte. Four WOOD STORKS were in the pond at Lack and Lindsay, ten
more were west of there. A PRAIRE FALCON was sighted east of Nyland.

Bob Miller also birded the Salton Sea and heard all the rails except
Black. His favorite bird was the WESTERN SCREECH OWL calling from his
front yard in Brawley.

Guy McCaskie recorded 122 species, including all of the expected
specialties along with a few fall migrant land birds. The only bird of
note was a female RUFF at the Gun Club ponds along Dogwood Rd. between
Keystone and Harris Roads.

Howard King, birding the sea with Ed Thomas, found 24 species of
shorebirds, including SEMI-PALMATED SANDPIPER on the east side of Garst
Rd. in the first pond south of Sinclair. On Saturday, August 6, they
observed two BLACK TURNSTONES at Obsidian Butte, four RUDDY TURNSTONES at
the west end of Obsidian Butte, and another at the pond on McKendry, and
another at the north end of Garst. Two STILT SANDPIPERS were at the west
end of Pound Rd. There seemed to be more gulls present than the last few
summers, with 120+ YELLOW-FOOTED GULLS at Poe Rd. and 60+ LAUGHING GULLS
on Garst Rd. Eight WOOD STORKS were west of Lindsay and Lack.

birds in this report, PLEASE LET US KNOW. We can't update reports if we
don't hear from you.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

In general, birds that are on this weekly summary are those that are
classified as at least rare in “Birds of Southern California” by Garrett
and Dunn, “Birds of the Salton Sea” by Patten, McCaskie, and Unitt, or
in “Birds of the Lower Colorado River Valley” by Rosenberg, Ohmart,
Hunter, and Anderson. Rarity can be regional or seasonal. For example, a
nuthatch reported at the Salton Sea, where it is rare, may be on the
summary. That same bird reported from the San Bernardino Mountains, where
it is common, would not be. A sparrow reported as a rarity in Riverside
in July, may be common there in December.
