A BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER was seen at the Cattleland Feedlots Slough north of
Strathmore on Sunday, August 7. The bird was seen by Eric Tull and Brooke Clibbon.
The slough is in the N/E corner of the Hwys 817 & 564 junction. The first wave of
shorebird migration is peaking now at sloughs in the Calgray area. Other highlights
over the W/E included a RED KNOT on the mudflats in the S/W corner of Eagle Lake S/E
of Strathmore found by Bill Wilson on Saturday, August 6, then seen there on Sunday,
August 7 by Eric Tull and Brooke Clibbon. To reach the parking area drive south
from Hwy 1 in Strathmore 9.7 kms on Hwy 817; then drive east 3.3 kms, then north 3.2
kms. Terry Korolyk observed a WESTERN SANDPIPER along the N/W shoreline of the
Cattleland Feedlots Slough at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 5. The bird was either an
adult moulting into winter plumage or a juvenile. Seen there at the same time by
Terry were one SANDERLING and 8 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS amongst very good numbers and
variety of other shorebirds.
Migrant songbirds are now being detected in the Calgary area. Banders at the
Inglewood Bird Sanctuary banded 2 PURPLE FINCHES there on Sunday, July 31 and on
Thursday, August 4, Mike Mulligan observed a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER there. Banders
banded a YELLOW-RUMP there on August 5, and on August 6 they banded a ROSE-BREASTED
GROSBEAK. A juvenile WESTERN KINGBIRD was sadly out of place at 10:00 am Saturday,
August 6 at James McKevitt & Millrise Blvd in S/W Calgary when it was seen by Terry
Korolyk.
The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Thursday, August 11.
