Allegheny County:
At Bald Knob on 10/30, 3 SHORT-EARED OWLS were seen roosting in the
grassland area (DY).
At the Imperial grasslands/Toy Airport area on 11/4, sightings included 1
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK (light phase), 8 NORTHERN HARRIERS, 1 RUBY-CROWNED
KINGLET, 1 AMERICAN COOT, a large flock of AMERICAN ROBINS (MV).
On 10/31 in East Liberty, 11 CEDAR WAXWING, 1 GRAY CATBIRD, 1 NASHVILLE
WARBLER, 5 CHIPPING SPARROWS; on 11/2, 1 HERMIT THRUSH, 1 GOLDEN-CROWNED
KINGLET, 1 juvenile YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, 1 BROWN CREEPER, 1 SWAMP
SPARROW, 3 CHIPPING SPARROWS; on 11/3, 1 BROWN CREEPER, 1 COMMON
YELLOWTHROAT, 1 WINTER WREN (DY).
On 11/6 in a Pittsburgh backyard, 2 flyover PINE SISKINS (MF).
Beaver County:
On 11/4 at Beaver River, 4 AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS, 1 BALD EAGLE (MV).
On 11/4 at Little Blue Lake, sightings included 50-60 KILLDEER, 1 PECTORAL
SANDPIPER, 11 DUNLIN, 2 AMERICAN KESTREL (MV).
On 11/4 at Ambridge Reservoir, 2 GREATER YELLOWLEGS (MV).
On 11/4 at Independence Marsh, 10 WOOD DUCKS, 1 AMERICAN BLACK DUCK, 1
GREEN-WINGED TEAL (MV).
Butler County:
The EURASIAN WIGEON was still present at Moraine State Park from 10/30
through 11/3, via various reports: on 10/30, feeding with a group of
AMERICAN WIGEON in the game propogation area of Moraine (DY); again at
noon on 11/1, in a loose aggregation of AMERICAN WIGEON, MALLARDS,
AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS, RUDDY DUCKS, and a couple of NORTHERN PINTAILS at
the Barkley Road boat launch (PH, JS, SS; also reported by WS); it is
evidently a first-year male with the typical head and upperparts of a
full-adult but a lot of juvenile "rustiness" on its sides. On 11/2, still
present at the Barkley Road boat launch (RS); and on 11/3, seen far out
from the Barkley Road access with a group of 10 AMERICAN WIGEON; over 20
AMERICAN WIGEON total were present (SK).
On 11/2 two white-phase SNOW GEESE were found at the duck blind off Route
422 (RS).
Clarion County:
On 10/31 in Sligo, sightings included FOX SPARROW, 3 HERMIT THRUSHES, 2
SWAMP SPARROWS, 4 first-winter WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS (CW).
Erie County:
On 11/5 at Presque Isle State Park, 71 species were seen including 1 RED-
THROATED LOON, 1 BLACK SCOTER, 1 WHITE-WINGED SCOTER, 2 SURF SCOTER, 6
dark-winged SCOTER, 1 LONG-TAILED DUCK, 1 LITTLE GULL (all at Sunset
Point), 1 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, 3 AMERICAN TREE SPARROW, 18 SNOW
BUNTING (all at Gull Point), 1 EASTERN PHOEBE (Pine Tree Trail), 1 COMMON
YELLOWTHROAT (Niagara Pond) (RS).
Lawrence County:
In the Plain Grove area on 10/30, sightings included 4 PIED-BILLED GREBES,
1 DUNLIN, and 8 SANDHILL CRANES (7 adults & 1 juvenile) at Mason Road
gravel pond; 1 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 4 WILSON'S/COMMON SNIPE, 1 LESSER
SCAUP, 6 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 1 NORTHERN HARRIER, 2 AMERICAN KESTRELS, 1
RING-NECKED PHEASANT, SAVANNAH SPARROWS, HORNED LARKS, AMERICAN PIPITS
(MV). On 11/5, 1 immature BALD EAGLE, 10 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 1 NORTHERN
SHRIKE, 1 NORTHERN HARRIER, 10,000-12,000 RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS/COMMON
GRACKLES/EUROPEAN STARLINGS (DY). Also on 11/5 in the Plain Grove area
(Lake Road and Black Swamp), GADWALL, NORTHERN PINTAIL, BLUE-WINGED TEAL,
GREEN-WINGED TEAL, PIED-BILLED GREBE, HORNED LARK, AMERICAN PIPIT (MV).
At the Volant Strips on 11/5, 3 SHORT-EARED OWLS, 6 NORTHERN HARRIERS, 1
AMERICAN KESTREL, 2 RING-NECKED PHEASANT (1 male, 1 female) (MV).
Mercer County:
At Shenango Lake on 11/5, 1 STILT SANDPIPER, 26 DUNLIN, 3 PECTORAL
SANDPIPER, RING-BILLED GULLS, HERRING GULL, 40-50 BONAPARTE'S GULLS,
COMMON LOON, 13 COMMON MERGANSERS, 29 GREAT BLUE HERONS (MV).
Warren County:
At Kinzua Dam on 11/4, 5 CAVE SWALLOWS (JF).
Washington County:
On 11/1 at a farm in Avella (Independence Township), 1 NORTHERN HARRIER
and a "black cloud"--tens of thousands--of COMMON GRACKLES (JT).
Westmoreland County:
On 11/2 a WESTERN KINGBIRD was discovered about 3/4 mile from Powdermill.
The bird was viewed feeding from a high perch on the edge of a field on
Horseshoe Bend Road off Route 711; four later attempts to find the bird
were unsuccessful (ML).
