This is Pinyon Jay with the New Mexico Bird Report for November 17, 2005,

In San Miguel County:
CR, RV, and MH on November 13 took the trip to the back of the Las Vegas
Refuge. On Middle Marsh there was a late AVOCET, six LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS,
and four LEAST SANDPIPERS. They also saw a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, eight
FERRUGINOUS HAWKS, 12 TREE SPARROWS, two LAPLAND LONGSPURS, and on McAllister Lake
nine
GREATER SCAUP, 50 ROSS'S and eight CACKLING GEESE, and four HOODED
MERGANSERS.
In Colfax County:
DC at the Sugarite State Park near Raton on November 12 at the visitor
center feeder found a tan phase WHITE-THROATED SPARROW and three SLATE-COLORED
JUNCOS. A LEWIS'S WOODPECKER was in the burn area across from Lake Alice.
On Stubblefield Lake DC had a male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE on November 16. He
found up to three LAPLAND LONGSPURS on the ne. shoreline on November 11; and saw
a DUNLIN there on November 10 and 13. DC reports that Lake 14 on the nearby M
axwell Refuge is closed for the winter. RV, and MH had two COMMON LOONS on
Lake 13 on November 12.
At Springer Lake DC saw three female HOODED MERGANSERS November 11. On
November 9 DC had 17 CALIFORNIA GULLS and over 200 COMMON MERGANSERS on Eagle Nest
Lake.
In Cibola County:
CJG on November 13 again saw the CATBIRD at the El Morro Monument that
has now been present about three weeks.
In Bernalillo County:
A report came from KS that GR saw a few BLACK ROSY-FINCHES that have
already arrived at the Crest House feeders on Sandia Crest east of Albuquerque on
November 12. DO saw them on November 14.
At the Rio Grande Nature Center in Albuquerque CP on November 12 saw a
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW at the Herb Garden feeder. A WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was
seen with the CACKLING GEESE on the pond by the parking lot on November 12 by CL,
DP, BV, and CP. JP and BP on November 12 saw the white-fronted and 318
Cackling Geese. JSt on November 13 saw the white-fronted goose and three HOODED
MERGANSERS with a WHITE-FACED IBIS. RY on November 14 said that CD and EH
reported seeing the wigeon on the parking lot pond while he saw both geese species,
two of the mergansers, and the wigeon later on the 14th.
CL on November 11 first saw the EURASIAN WIGEON on the visitor center
pond (perhaps the same male of previous winters?). It was not seen on November
12, but may have moved to Mariposa Basin Park west of the Rio Grande. JP and
BP checked there November 12 and did not find the wigeon. A MCCOWN'S LONGSPUR
was calling at the shooting range off Paseo del Volcan on the west side.
BV had a female EASTERN BLUEBIRD on November 12 on Forest Road 252 3/4
mile below the Cedro Peak Trailhead in the Manzanita Mts. south of Tijeras.
RY reports that a feeder named after Ryan has been placed at the visitor
center windows at the nature center. He says on November 12 a WHITE PELICAN
stopped at the main pond and a CURVE-BILLED THRASHER was in the chollas at the
entrance gate.
In Torrance County:
JJ found two WINTER WRENS in Trigo Canyon of the Manzano Mts. Wilderness
area on November 13.
In Roosevelt County:
DC on November 15 at the migrant trap 11 miles west of Melrose had a
YELLOW-SHAFTED FLICKER, three EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, and the PYRRHULOXIA.
In Socorro County:
On highway 380 east of San Antonio between mile markers 16 and 17 there
is a dirt road going north by grassy fields. After a jog in the road there is
a tank with a berm. Half a mile beyond JP, JO, BP, and LL found five
SPRAGUE'S PIPITS with hundreds of CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPURS, tens of MCCOWN'S
LONGSPURS, and two CACTUS WRENS. MB and NP found two of the pipits there on
November 13.
At Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio BH had a very late female
YELLOW WARBLER at the Flight Deck on November 12. He saw the WHITE-THROATED
SPARROW at the visitor center and six HOODED MERGANSERS. JP on November 11 found
a COMMON GRACKLE and two CATTLE EGRETS. CL on November 13 saw two EASTERN
PHOEBES, a HERRING GULL, two INCA DOVES at the Cactus Garden, a MERLIN, and late
were a GREAT EGRET and a YELLOWTHROAT.
CL on November 13 again saw the hybrid AMERICAN X EURASIAN WIGEON at
Turtle Bay Park on the NMTU campus in Socorro.
In Sierra County:
At Percha Dam State Park on November 6 CL had EASTERN BLUBIRDS south of
the park.
In Grant County:
PT at Roberts Lake had a NEOTROPIC CORMORANT and a BALD EAGLE ON November
8.
RS had a FOX SPARROW on November 11 at the Gila Bird Area.
In Hidalgo County:
In Clanton Canyon on November 9 MBr had a YELLOW-EYED JUNCO at the
campground. For the night shift he had two WHISKERED SCREECH-OWLS there and two
more down canyon at the riparian area a mile after the forest service
boundary with two WESTERN SCREECH-OWLS.
In Luna County:
LM on November 10 had a RUDDY GROUND-DOVE at the Mountain View Cemetery
in Deming. He advises that the waste water treatment ponds there will be
closed for up to a year with construction.
In Doņa Ana County:
MBr on November 15 had three HOODED MERGANSERS at the Old Refuge area
south of Mesilla with a bobcat with a kitten.
In Otero County:
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo CL reports that the 'no access'
signs are for hunters only. The entire shore is open to birding. On November 16
he had five BONAPARTE'S GULLS and SANDHILL CRANES there. Four HARRIS'S
HAWKS, three on one pole, were along US 70 at mile marker 208.9 just south of
Alamogordo.
In Eddy County:
SW reports that late CAVE SWALLOWS were still at the Carlsbad Caverns.
On November 13 there were still 38 present with six banded.

Field Trips:
Central Audubon in Albuquerque has Thursday field trips. For details call
Margaret Wallen at 341-0928. Check, as there may be a last minute change in
plans. There will no trip on Thanksgiving. On December 1 the trip is to the
Domingo Baca Trail on the west side of the Sandias and on December 8 they go to
the Rio Grande Nature Center.
Sundays in November the back roads of the Las Vegas Refuge will be open from
9 to 4 for birding. There will be programs on Sunday at 1. On November 20
the program is on the Maxwell Refuge with Patty Hoban; and November 27 the
Basics of Birds by Eileen Everett.
Southwestern Audubon will bird the Glenwood Fish Hatchery on Saturday,
November 19. Contact is at 534-1450.
The Festival of Cranes at Bosque del Apache Refuge will be November 15 to 20.
