What is the Rarebirds.com Rare Birds Map?
The Rare Birds Map was created to provide easy an intuitive access to rare bird alert information for the continental United State and parts of Canada. This information is available through mailing lists and on other web sites, but the Rare Birds Map displays the information in a way that allows users to easily locate alerts, determine how recent the information is, and quickly view species lists or full alerts for current and recent alerts for any location. Additionally, the Map provides a simple way to find and view alerts that mention a particular species.
Where does the information on the map come from?
The information on the Rare Birds Map currently comes from the BIRDEAST, BIRDCNTR and BIRDWEST rarebird alert mailing lists of theNational Birding Hotline Cooperative. The mailings from these lists are incorporated in the Rare Birds Map through a semi-automated process as they are received.
What information is included?
The map currently includes information for most locations starting around August 1, 2005. Some locations are not complete back to this date. Going forward, information for each location will be updated as it becomes available. Currently, information from the last 90 days is available. As improvements are made, it is expected that the previous year of alerts will be available.
How can I move around on the map?
There are two ways to move around on the map. First, you can double click any location on the map, and the map will move so that location is at the center of the map. Alternatively, you can hold down the primary button on your mouse (typically the left button) and drag the map around.
Why can't I zoom in?
The goal of the map is to provide an easy and intuitive way to provide access to rare birds information across large portions of North America, including the continental United States and parts of Canada. The icons on the map represent the general location of the rare bird alert information, for both statewide alerts and those for specific locations. At this scale, the ability to zoom in provides no additional information.
What other features are planned for the Rare Birds Map?
Many features are planned for the Rare Birds Map. Currently, the Map only includes information provided in the ….. In the near future, Rarebirds.com register users will be able to include their own information on the Map. This functionality will allow communities of birders to share and control their information in a centralized location.
